@westybsa That is one of my gripes with the story, SJW sometimes act in very dumb fashion just for the sake of the plot.

So all S-ranked are actually just immeasurable by the machine? The very few S-ranks everywhere must have a way to gauge or sense other S-rank power levels of sort or something like the way Jinwoo sees/visualizes the HA Chairman and Cha Hae-in auras, heck even Cha Hae-in sensed something like that assuming it was Chairman Go when she got out of the dungeon.

Fair enough, but I find it hard to understand why him joining the association would simply bar him from high level raids. Then again, yes, better to seek a guild that specializes in those, so why doesn't he? Walking past that fire wizard monster from the Hunter's Guild like he's a turd? Really?

The association doesn't mainly deal with gates, they deal with hunters. They only go into gates when absolutely necessary.
Also there are regulations how strong a strike team has to be to enter a gate. And strong hunters join big guilds instead.
Jinwoo needs to enter at least A rank gates to level up, but the association don't have access to those and they don't have a strike team to clear those.
That's why Jinwoo said "I want to fight." The associations doesn't really do much fighting.

Jinwoo's officially still an E-rank. He still has 3 days till the reevaluation and has a lot of work to do till then. That's why he stormed out of the place.

Thank you for the explanation. It helps.

Poor power scaling this episode.

Jinwoo claims that he feels that the A-rank dungeon boss is stronger than Vulcan and Metus. This contradicts what we know about the story so far:

1. Jinwoo was low B-rank when he fought Cerberus. Given how fast Cerberus drained his HP, and that it was an S-rank gate, Cerberus is likely low-A rank and Jinwoo got very lucky.
2. Kang was high B-rank. A high B-rank is equivalent to a B-rank dungeon boss. Jinwoo was also high B-rank when he fought Kang, so he fought the equivalent of a B-rank boss back then.
3. Jinwoo leveled up and became low A-rank when he fought Igris. Given how easily Igris overpowered him, Igris would have been about high A-rank.
4. He leveled up significantly from then. When he fought the ice bear boss, he was high A-rank as he claimed that he was almost on equal footing with Igris. By this point, he should be able to clear an A-rank dungeon boss.
5. He fought Baruka and claimed Baruka was clearly stronger than him. Baruka was therefore low/mid S-rank.
6. He leveled up a bunch more, fought Vulcan and Metus who should be low S-rank.

So why is Jinwoo getting enthusiastic about an A-rank boss when the Igris he fought back then would have been a stronger opponent?

There's no contradiction about this boss being stronger than previous ones. It's just that the A-rank is a very big circle in the Venn diagram of bosses.

Also you got a few things wrong. Shadows lose some of their original power, so Igris got weaker after getting recruited into the Shadow family.
Ranking is not linear and comparable to each other. So this means you need A rank hunters to beat a B rank gate. The Red Gate was around A rank.
Jinwoo was weaker than Baruka that's why he couldn't arise him.

He got exited because this is the first time he could fight an A rank dungeon boss on equal footing without cheap tricks. Every previous battle was about abusing the enemy's weak point.

The bosses he fought after Igris should have been S-rank (or borderline) given how much he has leveled up. That automatically puts them on a higher pedestal than an A-rank dungeon boss.

Nowhere in the anime did it say that shadows lose some of their original power. In fact, Jinwoo states "... and their strength reflects how strong they were in real life ..." before arising Igris. Although Jinwoo did not know if those shadows were stronger or weaker, the quote and information provided so far is highly misleading if shadows were indeed weaker.

You do not need A-rank hunters to defeat a B-rank boss. Jinho states "... or a top-tier C rank hunter" when Jinwoo was about to fight the spider. In a hypothetical scenario, Jinho could have been wrong; but, again, a very misleading quote if this were the case. Kang was a top-tier B-rank hunter, making him the pretty much the equivalent of a B-rank boss, so Jinwoo fought a B-rank boss before he leveled up a bunch and did the job change quest. Igris almost fodderized Jinwoo who should have been around low A-rank back then, indicating that Igris would have been about high A-rank. He fought stronger bosses after Igris.

He fought Igris with "cheap tricks". He fought Baruka with his shadows; however, the anime did not suggest that he would not use his shadows when facing an A-rank boss. He certainly did not use cheap tricks when he fought Vulcan and Metis.

The anime doesn't have time to tell everything from the LN and Manhwa, the shadows are 30% weaker but can lvl up and go beyond their original strength.
Ranking is determined by the amount of magical energy a gate emanates. It doesn't mean that the boss is the same level as the gate because the boss is just a portion of the sum of magical energy inside a gate.
Metus is S rank because of his immense mana pool but his physical stats were low. He's dead if someone gets through his undead army.
Igris was an A-rank but he was testing Jinwoo to see if he's worthy or not for the Shadow Monarch title.

By cheap tricks I was referring to previous battles, not Vulcan and Metus.

An A rank gate doesn't mean that an A rank hunter can clear it. Jeju island is an S rank but multiple S-rank hunter failed to clear it three times.
To clear an S-rank gate the strike team requires at least one National level hunter.
To clear an A-rank gate the strike team requires at least one S rank hunter. etc...

There should be a scene this season where Choi Jong-In is asked if he could clear a difficult A-rank gate by himself. And his response is: "It would be impossible."

The gates only Jinwoo can enter are using a different system than the gates everyone else can enter. This makes power scaling harder.
The system Jinwoo uses is a less accurate beta version designed by a shady guy who doesn't care for the lives of humans.
The measuring devices humans use are more accurate and was designed by someone who values human lives.
Also an A-rank can beat an S rank if he specializes in something, for example going all in on strength. (happens in the sequel)

Lol I knew immediately he was just gonna walk past him. Also Know Woo was only an A rank from the game, but that doesn't really matter he still is quite a badass considering he butts heads with S ranks frequently without really being intimidated by them even though he know he couldn't actually take them in a full on fight.
LMAO man in the hospital from the "Dilf" honestly I hope he reunites with his son soon and they don't drag it out really far. I'm also thinking his Dad can probably join the Hunter's Association instead as he's clearly easily S rank or stronger and seems like the Type that might join them.
Okay so they know he's an S-rank yet also they haven't made it public?
Okay... I guess? but what's the point all those people who were there knew, so surely news of a 10th Korean S-rank would simply travel by word of mouth no?
Noooo.... the cliffhanger... (like how he's trying to make money btw, but also seems to just pass up every opportunity to make money, I feel like he should be fairly rich at this point but okay. He could also just offer that orb to the "ultimate hunter" and simply be like "hey wanna buy this off me it's doubles your magic damage" which is like basically the perfect item for a guy like him so he's probably willing to pay like a billion for it or you know like a trillion in Korean currency ₩1.000.000.000.000)

I certainly like the setup for next episode. The two of them might just like click since they are both more of the broody type. I guess they will briefly clash and then trigger the boss room to open forcing them to cooperate and everybody having to acknowledge his rank.

@Yaggamy

We are talking about the anime, specifically whether the anime is conveying a logical flow of information or not. In the anime, there is no indication that shadows are weaker. The anime suggests that they are the same as their original form, and that they can level up also.

In the anime, gate ranking also determines the boss's strength and nothing suggests otherwise. An A-rank gate has an "A-rank" boss in strength. If we use the rationale that this doesn't hold, then the boss in an A-rank gate can be weaker than the boss in a C-rank gate. This goes against the logic of the story. Furthermore:

Jinho claims that you need to be a top C-rank at least to beat a C-rank boss (which clearly indicates that a "C-rank" boss in strength is associated with a C-rank gate). Extrapolating this, a top A-rank is able to clear an A-rank gate. Jinwoo was top B-rank when he fought Kang, who was another top B-rank. He fought the equivalent of a B-rank boss in strength. He leveled up significantly since then. He fought a high A-rank (Igris) during the job change quest. He then leveled up significantly since that point also, and fought enemies stronger.

There is no indication that the ranking of a gate for a single person is different to the ranking of a gate that anybody can enter. Again, we are talking about the anime. In the anime, Jinwoo even says before entering the Demon Castle in season 1 episode 7 - "if so, what awaits me inside will be magic beasts similar to those on Jeju island" - a message indicating to the audience that the monsters are comparable in strength regardless of who the gate was designed for.

Can you also please stop giving spoilers? Unfortunately, I have to report your post because this is not allowed without spoiler tags. I do not know anything about the plot details you are talking about, so please keep this discussion to the anime only.

Not a very action-heavy episode (which I suppose most or at least a large amount of us watch this series for), yet extremely important to the plot. The story's gone past a point of no return and the bigger picture will finally start unfolding now. Or will it? Well, I'm excited to find out in the upcoming week(s).

I thought he gained the ability of stealth he defeated another hunter in S1? Why not use it with the mining team, instead of waiting for the lunch break?

Jinwoo's father slapping that bald S-rank hunter into the ground was hilarious, but it really shows the strength he gained from spending a decade in what seemed like hell itself.

It’s also nice to see Jinwoo finally getting some recognition he’s worked hard for it, especially from the old man himself. But it’s crazy that he turned down his offer just to join a mining team for the chance to fight strong opponents.

For now, he’s caught the attention of that lady they keep forcing into relevance with fanservice and all that.

Sung Jin-woo can't really hide his aura from the other S tier ones, but anyway he won't join the organization as he wants to just keep grinding the highest tier dungeon alone, I mean it's in the show's title lol, and now up to trying to fight a A tier boss alone behind everyone's back, but Cha Hae-In is on another level now I wonder how she'll react if she finds out the aura she sensed was Sung Jin-woo's one...

No. A top A-Rank hunter can NOT solo an A-Rank dungeon boss. A mid S-Rank can’t either and it’s gonna get talked about in the anime. I don’t know what’s hard to understand about gate ranks? A dungeon boss will always be stronger than their gates’ rank. Jinwoo’s dad was the only one found inside the american gate and it was estimated as one of the highest A-Rank gates. Is his dad an A-Rank? No, he one-shotted a mid-high S-Rank as if he was a fly.

Finally...

Finally Jinwoo is S-rank, now the real question is: will he join a guild or will he continue solo-leveling?
