    For anyone considering using St John's-wort medicinally, as Annie said, you have to be super careful, especially if you're on other medications. It can speed up the metabolism of some drugs. For example, a person who is diabetic, might give themselves insulin, and if they've taken st john's-wort, they might be thinking soon after "why does it feel like I didn't even take that insulin", which could end very poorly for them. That's just one example, but it has SO many interactions. Always talk with your doctors first.

    • @OldManFerdiad
      @OldManFerdiad Год назад +5

      really glad you made this point. A good rule of thumb is that if you take any other medicine, don't take St John's Wort unless you've consulted a qualified practitioner that can tell you about drug interactions.

      I agree with your sentiment of ‘Always ask your doctor before using any herbs medicinally,’ but I’m wondering where you get your information on St.John’s wart interacting with insulin? I didn’t see anything come up in terms of actual research pertaining to insulin itself, but in the case of type 2 diabetes where they are on extra meds like metformin those are the types of medications SJW interacts or may potentially interact and cause some problems. It seems processing by the liver for the herb and the medication may be where the interactions lay, but it does also seem to interact at the brain level with psychological medications too. For people who are type 1 diabetics who are insulin dependent but not taking anything to combat insulin resistance (because type 1s as they age can become insulin resistant over time), and since type 1’s especially and many type 2’s are now using continuous glucose monitors having the problem you are describing along with the instructions from an endocrinologist would dictate that the diabetic doesn’t go dosing beyond what they need the insulin for in terms of what they are ingesting for carbs, at least for 3 to 4 hours after dosing. And even that changes if someone is on the omnipod continuously getting their background insulin plus their meal dosage fed into their system, and it is automated. I’m an autistic mom to a type 1 diabetic kiddo, I just wanted to warn against presenting information pertaining to medication use and specific types of chronic diseases that medications are required for as if it were factual without any supporting information and understanding of how the herb and the medication being referenced interacts. An accurate example would have been someone using MAOI’s may have medications not work or work to effectively or have psychosis as a side effect of interacting. That is quite well documented as having drug interactions and being contraindicated for use. As responsible practitioners of the herbal crafts we need to understand our words matter and we want to use them wisely and not spread misinformation and speculation when we share our opinions and advice. Blessed be.

    Just a tip for anyone wanting to work with horsetail, never, ever plant it on your property, you will never be rid of it and it takes over so badly and is a huge pest, finding it where it’s growing wild to use from there or buying some loose and shipping it to your house is much better than trying to grow it yourself, I found that out when I was considering growing my own at some point and I’m so grateful I didn’t, I’ve since seen it take over various yards and now I just dread it appearing naturally 😂🤦‍♀️😬

    Anna, your videos have helped me through a very difficult time in my life, and I’ve been following for years. We’ve spoken before or at the very least have interacted through your comment section here online throughout the years and I’ve finally established my business enough to where I’m able to offer a free custom set of nails (I make high quality hand painted and sculpted press ons) to you. I’d be honored to make you one. I can make super short styles, as well, and I’d love to, as a fellow green witch, make you a nature themed set. I’d truly love it.
    PS: I have your book and I love it so much. 🥲 Years before you released it, I was like “I hope one day she comes out with a book because it would be so helpful.” ❤️

    Thank you. This was a lovely way to start the morning. St. John's wort really does have a lot of interactions. I take it and I always ask my pharmacist about interactions. A good pharmacist is indispensable.

    • @lenanana8
      @lenanana8 11 месяцев назад

      Totally agree with you! Although I would say that a naturopath would be more useful in this case. If I asked any herb related question to any of the pharmacists in my city they would look at me as if I was crazy. Or worse, go on a typical "modern medicine" doctors rant about how herbal medicine is hokey brainwashing, doesn't work and has no scientific proof. Ughgh....

    If you compost herbs that has been dried out for a particular use (say house protection, strengthening your spirit, etc) or previously been imbued (sorry if that's not the proper term) with a particular intent (like for joy, calmness, focus, etc), does that intent or use persist after its been composted? Or does that decay and diminish with time? Logic tells me that it diminishes with time, just like how herbs and spices lose their potency over time, but perhaps herbal magick works a bit differently? It would be really cool to compost herbs that still have protective, healing, strengthening, etc abilities and then use that to nourish your veggie or herb garden. That would be a really nice cycle of nature little magic right there!
    I'm so sorry if this question is silly, I'm just starting out my herbal journey and I'm quite ignorant about many things.

    Personally, St John’s Wort doesn’t do anything. I took it as a tea multiple times a day for a month. I quit my consumption of all interactions during that time. Didn’t work for me. Also, the more recent research is finding it less useful than presumed, although the interactions are still dangerous. So, I’d just say to stay away from it. I’ve never known anyone to claim it work for them medicinally
